Malawi, an attractive land-locked country of plateaus, rolling plains, lakes, mountains, forests and seemingly endless woodlands, is fast being recognized as one of the most essential African birding destinations. Our Comprehensive Malawi tour explores the prime birding and game viewing areas throughout this beautiful country.

Our journey begins in the verdant forests of the Thyolo Mountains where we will search out the stunning White-winged Apalis a rare Thyolo Alethe. We wind our way into the humid lowlands where the productive Liwonde National Park awaits us. The reserve is scenically positioned on the banks of the mighty Shire River. Here we will bird the Mopane woodlands for specials such as Racket-tailed Roller and Arnot’s Chat, take guided walks with an armed ranger for Böhm’s Bee-eater and Brown-breasted Barbet and cruise the waters of the Shire searching for Pel’s Fishing Owl and White-backed Night-Heron. Typical African mega-fauna abounds including healthy populations of Elephant and Hippopotamus - paradise indeed!

The tour also seeks out teeming multi-species bird parties in the rich Brachystegia woodlands along the Dzalanyama Mountain range, where we focus on a wide variety of broad-leaved woodland specials that include Stierling’s Woodpecker, Souza’s Shrike and Olive-headed Weaver. The incredible Nyika National Park is situated on a seemingly in-cessant plateau punctuated with superb montane forests and endless grasslands that hold numerous bird species, some of which are incredibly localized. Cracking forest gems include the shy Sharpe’s Akalat, White-chested Alethe, Olive-flanked Robin-Chat and the bold Chapin’s Apalis.

Malawi boasts a fantastic diversity of habitats all amalgamated into one small, friendly country and this translates into a wealth of bird species and stunning attractions.

Please note that we are not offering a standard set departure tour to Malawi during 2010. We are however still arranging customized private tours to this country and we will gladly assist you in arranging the perfect guided birding or wildlife adventure to Malawi for you.
