Cameroon forms the intergrade between West and Central Africa and harbors a wide range of habitats from vast lowland rainforests, montane forests on some of Africa’s highest peaks, broad-leafed woodlands, and in the far north, extensive Sahelian semi-desert. Our comprehensive three-week tour visits all these zones and provides a thorough coverage of West Africa’s richest birding destination.

In the moist south, we visit prime sites including Mt Cameroon, Korup National Park, Mt Kupe and the Bamenda Highlands. We will seek out numerous endemics and both lowland and montane forest birds. Names such as Black Guineafowl, Bannerman’s Turaco, Bare-cheeked Trogon, Vermiculated Fishing Owl, Mount Kupe Bushshrike, Rachel’s Malimbe and Mount Cameroon Speirops should whet any birder’s appetite! Korup is famous for its colonies of Grey-necked Picathartes and we stand an excellent chance of seeing these peculiar birds on this tour – no Rockjumper group has ever dipped!

In central Cameroon, we visit the Adamawa Plateau and Benoue National Park, areas of mixed broad-leafed woodland. This region teems with birds, and specialities include Schlegel’s Francolin, Brown-chested Lapwing, Spotted Thrush-Babbler, Bamenda Apalis and Dybowski’s Twinspot. Here, we can find both the spectacular Pennant-winged and strange Standard-winged Nightjars side by side. To the far north, the fabulous Waza National Park is a superb birding and mammal-watching destination, and we will seek many arid-zone specials including Arabian Bustard, Black Crowned Crane, the aberrant Quail-plover, Golden Nightjar, River Prinia, Cricket Longtail and Rock Firefinch (previously considered to be a Nigerian endemic). As we thoroughly cover this vast country, we hope to observe up to six hundred bird species and a wealth of exciting African wildlife.
