Brazil, one of the most biodiverse countries of the world, is a dream destination for any naturalist and especially so for birders. During this tour we explore the celebrated Pantanal and the verdant Amazon rainforest, replete with a diversity of avifauna rivaled nowhere else on our planet! We also offer an extension to the endemic-rich Atlantic forests of Intervales State Park.
The Pantanal is the planet’s largest wetland, encompassing 250 000 square kilometers of emerald forests, savannas, swathing rivers and shallow lagoons. We will explore this verdant and diverse corner of Brazil searching for iconic Pantanal species such as Jabiru and Hyacinth Macaw. In addition, we can expect a fine cast of other star-birds including Chestnut-bellied Guans, Greater Rhea, the impressive Great Rufous Woodcreeper, the spectacular Scarlet-headed Blackbird, Pale-crested Woodpecker, Bare-faced Curassow, the delightful Helmeted Manakin, Band-tailed Antbird and the strange Dull-capped Attila. Augmenting the avian diversity is the great selection of mammals, including the fabulous Jaguar (nowhere else easier to observe than here!), Brazilian Tapir, Giant Anteater and the porcine White-lipped Peccary.
Next we will visit the rich forests of the Amazon to seek some of the regions most spectacular birds. This we will do in the surroundings of a wonderful lodge boasting miles of well-maintained trails, as well as a high canopy platform that exposes us to the hidden world of the forest canopy. On the trails we may find the likes of Rufous-necked Puffbird, Rufous-capped Nunlet, Glossy Antshrike, Dot-backed and Manu Antbirds, the recently described Cryptic Forest Falcon, Spotted, Amazonian, Thrush-like and Variegated Antpittas, Bare-eyed Antbird and the endearing Zigzag Heron, while from the canopy tower we will scan for gaudy Spangled and Purple-throated Cotingas, Red-fan and Kawall’s Parrot, and Curl-crested and Red-necked Aracaris. The mammals of this area are also not to be neglected, and we may encounter the ever lethargic Brown-throated Three-toed and Southern Two-toed Sloth, Lesser Anteater, Feline Night-monkey, endemic Red-nosed Spider Monkey and the Red-nosed Bearded Saki Monkey.
For those wanting to get the most out of their time in Brazil, we have also created an extension to the endemic-rich southeast, visiting the very productive Intervales State Park. Situated on the high Serra do Mar escarpment, this park contains pristine Atlantic forests and harbors some exciting species that include Helmeted Woodpecker, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Black-fronted Piping Guan, Long-trained Nightjar, Spot-billed Toucanet, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Hooded Berryeater, Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, Spotted Bamboowren and Large-tailed Antshrike, among many others!
