Eastern Europe - Tour Destination
Offering a delightful combination of great birding in forest-clad mountain slopes and vast, open grassland, Eastern Europe is an essential destination for those interested in birds of Europe and indeed Asia. Many species of largely Asian distribution reach their western limits here and important populations of Great Bustard, Asian Imperial Eagle and Great Snipe are also found here.
In the forests of Poland and Slovakia we will search for owls, including Boreal and Ural Owls and, especially woodpeckers (all nine of Europe’s woodpeckers occur here – Black, Eurasian Three-toed, Great, Middle and Lesser Spotted, White-backed, European Green, Syrian and Grey-headed!). Not only is this area great for birds – we will also keep a look for some special mammals, and if we are fortunate we may even see Grey Wolf!
The Biebrza Marshes are home to a large variety of waders and waterfowl, many of which breed here, and raptors are a feature here as well – Northern and Montagu’s Harriers and Golden and White-tailed Eagles. The area abounds with warblers and we will search for such specialties as Aquatic and Common Grasshopper Warblers and Thrush Nightingale.
The Great Hungarian Plain, with its numerous wetlands and vast grasslands, will provide a suitable end to our tour. This area boasts the largest population of Great Bustard in Europe, and we should see the majestic males engaged in their spectacular display. We invite you to come and enjoy European birding at its best!
Please note that we are not offering a standard set departure tour to Eastern Europe during 2010. We are however still arranging customized private tours to this country and we will gladly assist you in arranging the perfect guided birding or wildlife adventure to Eastern Europe for you.
