New Caledonia - Destination

Kagu by David Shackelford
Kagu by David Shackelford

New Caledonia hosts a collection of very localized and endemic birds found only on this remote island, now considered one of the world’s most ecologically important and critically endangered hotspots. Searching through a variety of habitats including stunning subtropical forest and rugged mountains, we will travel several days across the main island and tiny Lifou Island. Tour targets include such fantastic avian wonders as the striking Cloven-feathered Dove, scarce Crow Honeyeater, endemic Horned Parakeet, New Caledonian Cuckooshrike, Large Lifou White-eye and difficult Red-throated Parrotfinch among many others. Of course our primary target and crown jewel of our efforts will be locating the emblematic bird of New Caledonia, the extraordinary flightless Kagu. This strange avian relict from the past is even placed in its own monotypic family.
